Assignment Week #2, Item #5

Reviewing the first three chapters I see that it is important to take many points into consideration before stating the argument. We need to consider the purpose, context, and media for our arguments. Obviously this can be a lengthy process or a very short process, depending on how much time we have.

We have to decided what our purpose for arguing will be. Do we want to state an opinion, reach a specific goal, or reconcile a difference. Or will it be some combination of the three.

We have to analyze the context of our argument. Do we know the audience, what are they like? Does our argument have the potential to alienate some of the audience, if so, how can we soften the argument to not offend, but still get our point across.

What mode will our argument take? Will we be creating an advertisement to sell the latest handbag? Will we be offering our opinion on the Editorial page of our local newspaper?

Not every argument needs to follow these formal steps. Often times we follow these processes without much thought. Other times we are required to give serious thought, research and consideration to the point before we offer our argument.

By wrapping all of the points into one argument, we will have formed a great argument, one that will probably win our point.
